Tutela Mater is Latin for “Protective Mother”. She is a cheetah/human mother who is scanning the horizon for threats so she can protect her offspring. One can imagine themselves as a child behind her legs. She is as fierce and protecting as she is caring for her offspring. Her hands glow with love, warmth, and protection.

She is part of my “mother” series of paintings where I am exploring the qualities of motherhood through creating human hybrid characters with other animal species who display the same mothering attributes as we do. The hands all glow with love, warmth, protection, and care. I’d like the viewer to be able to imagine themselves being held by or protected by those hands. Imagine reparenting yourself in the way that you would have liked to have been cared for.
